There’s always a story beyond the actual birth of the baby. I’m hired to capture that birth, but there’s always something else to capture. Funny thing is I never see that story until I’m at home editing those photos. During the delivery, I’m too busy capturing the hired story: the birth.
I go home. Upload the photos. Edit one to share quickly. And then I walk away from the photos. I always have to walk away.
When I come back, there’s something I missed while I was in the room. Something I missed during the upload. But it’s always there waiting to come out. It’s so strong that the Story feels like it’s taunting me: How could you have missed this during the shoot? Good thing your camera had your back… (Yes, inanimate things talk to me with a mocking tone.)
When I met Lindsay for our first meeting, I was also able to meet her oldest son and younger twins girls. I discovered she and her husband opted to not find out the sex of their fourth child. She said she was hoping it was another boy. The girls had each other and she wanted the same for her son.
Early on a Tuesday morning, I got the call. About 20 minutes after arriving at their house, Lindsay became a mother again. I love the seconds before the parents check the sex. It’s almost like an afterthought, but then a burst of excitement fills the room. She got her wish.
Moments after her second son was born, her first woke up and walked into the bathroom to meet his brother. He rarely left the room. To watch this new relationship unfold was beautiful.
Congrats,Lindsay and Scott. Thank you for letting me witness your first son meet his baby brother. Thank you, Choice for letting me snap while you work.
